300+ Locations: Mapping the MiPermit Network

If you run car parks in the UK, there’s a good chance your drivers have already parked with MiPermit somewhere else. The app runs at more than 300 locations across the UK, in 279 distinct towns and districts. That makes it one of the most familiar ways to pay for parking in England and Wales.

This article looks at where that network is, who runs it, and what it means for a private operator thinking about cashless parking.

Who uses MiPermit

Councils are the core of the MiPermit network. Today, 60 principal local authorities use it: 56 in England and 4 in Wales. That’s about 16% of the UK’s 382 councils.

Alongside them are 5 town and parish councils, 1 parking partnership and 13 private and other operators. Together they make up a network that drivers meet again and again as they travel.

Where it is

Plot every MiPermit location on a map and draw a 10km circle around each one. Those circles cover:

  • 26% of England’s land area, roughly 1 in 4
  • 17% of Wales
  • 15.5% of the UK overall

Coverage is thinner in Scotland, where Glasgow is the only area, and there’s none yet in Northern Ireland. This is a network centred on England and Wales, and that’s where it helps operators most.

Why the size of the network matters to you

For drivers, a cashless app is only as useful as the number of places they can use it. Every new app is another download, another account and another card to register. Many drivers won’t bother, and they look for a pay machine or park somewhere else instead.

MiPermit has been installed more than 7 million times on iOS and Android. When you add MiPermit to your car parks, plenty of your drivers can pay with an app they may already have on their phone. The ones who don’t can use it straight away at your sites and in hundreds of other places.

What it means for an operator

A familiar app removes friction at the payment point. Drivers who already have MiPermit can pay in seconds, with no new download, account or card to set up. That means fewer abandoned payments, fewer queries for your team, and a smoother experience for drivers at your sites and across the network.

In the rest of this series we’ll look at what the network’s reach means for your drivers, how permits can turn spare spaces into income, and why councils trust MiPermit.
