Today marks a significant milestone for the private parking sector with the publication of the Single Code of Practice. This new Code aims to elevate standards, providing greater transparency and consistency for motorists across the UK. Our colleagues at the British Parking Association (BPA) and the International Parking Community (IPC) have worked tirelessly with the support of the wider industry and today marks the next step in the industry’s journey.
What this means for the Private Parking Sector
The introduction of the Single Code of Practice is a major development for the private parking industry. It introduces several key measures designed to improve the overall experience for motorists, including:
- An appeals charter: Establishing clear parameters for motorists to appeal against parking charges.
- A 10-minute grace period: Allowing motorists a buffer period, ensuring fair treatment.
- Consistent rules: Standardising regulations for private parking operators to follow.
- Clear signage: Ensuring motorists have clear guidance to navigate parking on private land.
- Protection for the vulnerable: Maintaining strong deterrents against the abuse of blue badge bays, while safeguarding the rights of the most vulnerable in society.
- Capped parking charges: Keeping parking charges capped at £100, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.
Private parking operators are required to implement the new Code by 1st October 2024, with all existing sites needing updates by December 2026. This timeline allows for a structured transition to the new standards, ensuring compliance across the sector.
